Allocation of Buses and Routes

After the opening of Sandy Lane Garage in 1954, the buses and routes were each allocated to either Harnall Lane Garage or Sandy Lane Garage.

Sandy Lane Garage

All the buses with an odd fleet number (1, 3, 5, etc) were allocated to Sandy Lane Garage. The routes allocated to Sandy Lane were:

  • Service 2 from Radford to Cheylesmore via the council House
  • Service 3 from Stoke Aldermore to Hen Lane/Holbrooks via Cox Street
  • Service 4 from Pool Meadow to Wyken
  • Service 5/5A from The Coventry Theatre to Coundon
  • Service 7 from Allesley to Sewall Highway via The Coventry Theatre (Ford street on return)
  • Service 10 from Pool Meadow to Brownshill Green
  • Service 12 from Pool Meadow to Burton Green
  • Service 13 from Broad Lane to Toll Bar End via Pool Meadow (Ford street on return)
  • Service 15 from Broadgate to Whitmore Park
  • Service 17/17A from Broadgate to Baginton/Finham
  • Service 18/18A from Corporation Street to Canley
  • Service 23 from Pool Meadow to Allesley Park

So, an even numbered bus would not have been expected to be seen on any of the above routes.

Harnall Lane Garage

All the buses with an even fleet number (2, 4, 6, etc) were allocated to Harnall Lane Garage. The routes allocated to Harnall Lane were:

  • Service 1 from Chaplefields to Stoke Heath via the Council House
  • Service 6 from Pool Meadow to Walsgrave
  • Service 8/8A from Pool Meadow to Tile Hill
  • Service 9 from Earlsdon to Copsewood via Broadgate
  • Service 11 from Glendower Avenu to Binley via the Council House
  • Service 14/14A Inner Circle via Coventry Railway Station
  • Service 16/16A from Green Lane to Keresley via Broadgate
  • Service 19 from Pool Meadow to Berkswell
  • Service 20/20A from Coventry Railway Station to Bedworth via Broadgate
  • Service 21 from Broadgate to Bell Green
  • Service 22 from Purcell Road to Willenhall via Broadgate

So, an odd numbered bus would not have been expected to be seen on any of the above routes.

However, crews also had to learn the routes of the other depot so that they could cover them in the event of a lack of availability of buses or crews from the other depot.  So there would have been occasions when even numbered buses could have been seen on the Sandy Lane routes and odd numbered buses on the Harnall Lane routes.
