1962 Route

Corporation Street to Canley

From Corporation Street via Spon Street, Spon End, Hearsall Lane and Canley Road to Canley Halt, then:

(a) Service 18 via Canley Road and Charter Avenue to the terminus at Bradney Green, diverting on return along Burnsall Road (East) and Sir Henry Parkes Road to Canley Halt.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just beyond Bradney Green;
  • Bus reversed across the road into Bradney Green, then turned left into Charter Avenue for layover and pick-up.

(b) Service 18A via Sir Henry Parkes Road, Burnsall Road (West), Prior Deram Walk, Sheriff's Avenue and Charter Avenue to the terminus at Park Wood Lane.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just beyond Park Wood Lane;
  • Bus reversed into Park Wood Lane, then turned right into Charter Avenue for layover and pick-up.

History of the Route

April 1937

Service 18 Canley branch created, running to Burnsall Road, using Spon Street to connect from Fleet Street to Spon End, rather than the Queen Victoria Road route.

Late 1937

Canley Service Renumbered 18A.

1943

Service 18A extended from Burnsall Road to Sheriff Avenue via, presumably via Burnsall Road and Prior Deram Walk.

October 1945

Service 18A extended further along Sheriff Avenue and Charter Avenue to Mitchell Avenue.

March 1949

Service 18A further extended along Charter Avenue to Marler Road.

December 1950

Service 18A further extended along Charter Avenue to Bradney Green.

August 1953

Original Service 18A reduced by a third, but supplemented by services running from Corporation Street via Canley Road and Charter Avenue as far as Mitchell Avenue.

December 1954

Service 18A buses turning at Mitchell Avenue extended to Bradney Green.

March 1955

Service 18 was renumbered Service 12 and Service 18A via the Crematorium was renumbered 18, while the Service via Prior Deram Walk remained 18A.

August 1960

Service 18A extended along Charter Avenue to Park Wood Lane.

History of the Service Number

April 1936

Route from Pool Meadow to Burton Green acquired from Bunty Motorways, running via Canley and Westwood Heath as Service 18.  Route not specified but probably Hales Street, Corporation Street, Fleet Street, Queen Victoria Road, Queens Road, The Butts, Spon End, Hearsall Lane, Canley Road, Ivy Farm Lane, Shultern Lane, Kirby Corner Road, Westwood Heath Road and Cromwell Lane, terminating at Red Lane.

August 1951

Service 18 diverted away from Ivy Farm Lane and Shultern Lane, reaching Kirby Corner Road via Charter Avenue and Sir Henry Parkes Road.

August 1953

Service 18 further diverted away from Canley Road via Sir Henry Parkes Road directly to Kirby Corner.  Original Service 18A reduced by a third, but supplemented by services running from Corporation Street via Canley Road and Charter Avenue as far as Mitchell Avenue.

March 1955

Service 18 was renumbered Service 12 and Service 18A via the Crematorium was renumbered 18, while the Service via Prior Deram Walk remained 18A.
