1962 Route

Pool Meadow to AWA Baginton/Ryton

From Pool Meadow via Ford Street, Cox Street, Whitefriars Street and London Road to Toll Bar End then:

(a) Via Banbury Road to the terminus at Ryton Works.  Possible terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" outside Ryton Works;
  • Bus reversed into entrance of Ryton Works for layover and pick-up.

(b) Via private Road to the terminus at AWA Baginton.  Possible terminus details from description:

  • "All passengers alight here" in private road to works;
  • Bus turned in the private road for layover and pick-up.

Willenhall services turned on London Road before Toll Bar End at Chace Avenue.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just beyond Chace Avenue;
  • Bus reversed into Chace Avenue, then turned right into London Road for layover and pick-up.

Toll Bar End services turned on London Road just before Toll Bar End roundabout.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just before roundabout;
  • Layover and pick-up at terminus, then the bus turned round the roundabout for the reverse journey.

Ford Street to Broad Lane

From Ford Street via Hales Street, Corporation Street, Queen Victoria Road, Queens Road, The Butts, Spon End, Hearsall Lane and Broad Lane to Banner Lane.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just before Banner Lane;
  • Bus pulled forward, then reversed into Banner Lane for layover and pick-up.

Fare Stages from Broad Lane to Toll Bar End

Pre-1961

Eastern Green Road, Beech Tree Avenue, Glendower Avenue, Hearsall Common, Coventry Technical College, Pool Meadow (Ford Street on Return), Acacia Avenue, Daventry Road, Abbey Road and Toll Bar End.

1962

Hawthorn Lane, Eastern Green Road, Larch Tree Avenue, The Phoenix Hotel, Glendower Avenue, Tile Hill Lane, Farman Road, Coventry Technical College, Hill Street, Pool Meadow (Ford Street on Return), The Gaumont, Gulson Road, Daventry Road, Whitley Hospital, Abbey Road, Stonehouse Lane and Toll Bar End.

N.B. Stonehouse Lane is only a few yard from Toll Bar End so, in view of the terminus at Chace Avenue, it is possible that Chace Avenue could have been the location of the Fare Stage between Abbey Road and Toll Bar End.

History of the Route

June 1928

Service 9 introduced as a new service from Greyfriars Green to Broad Lane (turning at Banner Lane) via Queens Road, The Butts, Spon End, Hearsall Lane and Broad Lane.

October 1931

City terminus moved from Greyfriars Green to the new Pool Meadow.  It is unclear whether the new route to Hales Street was via Spon Street and Corporation Street, Queen Victoria Road and Corporation Street or Warwick Road, Hertford Street, Broadgate and Trinity Street.

1933

Service 13 introduced as a new service from Pool Meadow to Willenhall via London Road.  The most probable route was via Ford Street, Cox Street, Whitefriars Street and London Road.  The Willenhall terminus may have been in St James' Lane.

November 1934

Service 9 City terminus moved to Broadgate, presumably via Warwick Road and Hertford Street from Greyfriars Green.

May 1938

Service 13 extended westwards to Broad Lane (turning at Banner Lane) via Hales Street, Corporation Street, Fleet Street, Queen Victoria Road, Queens Road, The Butts, Spon End, Hearsall Lane and Broad Lane.  The new extension replaced the withdrawn Service 9.

1941

Extended eastwards with alternate services running to Rootes at Ryton and AWA Baginton.

May 1946

Service 13A introduced between Pool Meadow and the Phoenix at the intersection of Broad Lane and the Bypass.  Service 13A discontinued in 1949.

December 1948

Short working Saturday service began to Willenhall every 30 minutes (later every 15 minutes), terminating at the Chace Hotel.
