Friday: every 6 minutes

1962 Route

Coventry Theatre to Coundon

From the Coventry Theatre via Hales Street, Corporation Street, Hill Street, Coundon Road and Barkers Butts Lane, then:

(a) Service 5 via Westhill Road, Holyfast Road and Norman Place Road, to the terminus at the junction with Duncroft Avenue.  Known terminus details from personal recollection:

  • "All passengers alight here" where Norman Place widened for the junction with Duncroft Avenue;
  • Bus swung round in road widening for layover and pick-up opposite terminus.

(b) Service 5A via Courtland Avenue and Forfield Road to the terminus at Kingsbury Avenue.  Probable terminus details from the road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" at the end of Forfield Road;
  • Bus was able to swing round in the throat of Forfield Road for layover and pick-up outside the Brooklands.

History of the Route

June 1928

Service 5, which was already in existence, was extended westward via Jordan Well, Earl Street, High Street, Smithford Street, Fleet Street, Hill Street and Coundon Road to Barkers' Butts Lane.

November 1941

Service curtailed to run between The Hippodrome and Coundon.

November 1942

Extended along Westhill Road and Holyfast Road to terminate in Norman Place Road.

March 1959

Service 5A to Kingsbury Road began, diverting from the main route at Westhill Road via Courtland Avenue and Forfield Road.

History of the Service Number

January 1926

Introduced between London Road and the Craven Arms via Whitefriars Street, Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street, Gosford Green and Binley Road.

April 1927

City terminus moved to the North end of Whitefriars Street at the Gaumont.  Extended along Brandon Road to Binley Village.  At the time, what is now Binley Woods was called Binley Village, but it is possible that the service terminated at the end of Willenhall Lane.

June 1928

Extended westward via Jordan Well, Earl Street, High Street, Smithford Street, Fleet Street, Hill Street and Coundon Road to Barkers' Butts Lane.

March 1936

Some short working services to Gosford Green extended to the Bulls Head in Binley Road.

November 1940

Service 5A introduced as a new Service to replace Tram Service 8 to Copsewood after the tram routes were abandoned because of air raid damage.  Service 5A ran from Coventry Railway Station to Copsewood via Eaton Road, Stoneleigh Terrace, Queen Victoria Road, Fleet Street, Corporation Street, Hales Street, White Street, Primrose Hill Street, Victoria Street, King William Street, Berry Street, Paynes Lane, Gosford Green and Binley Road, turning at Bromleigh Drive.

January 1941

Service 5A withdrawn after changes to Service 11 route.

November 1941

Service curtailed to run between The Hippodrome and Coundon, with the Copsewood service taken over by Service 9 and the Binley service taken over by Service 11.
